Novelist/Fashion Journalist/Screenwriter Nancy Mangano (Interview)

We had the pleasure of catching up with Nancy Mangano — a multifaceted talent whose work spans bestselling mystery novels, screenwriting, and global fashion journalism.
With a passion for storytelling and a signature style that blends glamor and grit, Nancy is a creative force bringing characters and couture to life.

Let’s dive into her journey —

1. Can you introduce yourself and tell us what you do?

“Hi. My name is Nancy Mangano and I am an American novelist, screenwriter and fashion journalist. I write the Natalie North murder mystery book series with four published novels to date. I own, write and edit the global online fashion, beauty, style magazine Nancy Marie Mangano Style. I also write feature film screenplays with one script in development for a Hollywood movie. We’re aiming for an international theater distribution before the movie will be on streaming platforms.”

2. How did your journey in this field begin?ians or artists have inspired you the most?

“I have been interested in the entertainment industry and in fashion for most of my life. Fashion and style is just inside of me; I love it! I also have an avid desire to write, so I write books, movies and also my fashion magazine. The majority of my inspiration comes from writing things I know, such as detective work, murder mysteries and basically what lives inside of me. I truly thrive on creativity and developing characters, plot lines, dialogue, etc. that comes to life when I write my material. For novels I loved reading Jackie Collins novels and in fashion I love Calvin Klein and Versace!”

3. How would you describe your creative process?

“My creative process would probably surprise most people. I never write outlines and often times when I start a novel or a screenplay I don’t know the ending. I have found that once you write the first few sentences or paragraphs, the story begins to write itself. The characters themselves start telling their own story and they take the story on its own path. Often times I don’t know what’s coming next! It’s a fun way to write. With my novels. when I begin a new chapter I only know the pivotal point I need to get across in that chapter to keep the story going. Writing this way takes me on a fun journey with lots of twists and turns. It’s never boring!”

4. What does a typical day look like for you?

“Even though I do most of my writing from home, I never write in my pajamas. I get up every morning and get dressed just like I’m heading to an office. I feel better to write when I’m dressed and have my makeup on. I suppose it’s the fashion plate inside of me. Depending on what project I’m working on, I’ll write some of my latest novel, post a fashion blog on my magazine or work on a screenplay. I also do all of my own social media publicity,, so I spend approximately one hour a day updating my social media accounts. I love what I do so none of this feels like work to me!”

5. What has been your proudest moment so far?

“Getting my books published, having my fashion magazine read globally and getting my screenplays to producers. Seeing my work and my dreams coming to life is wonderful. I’ve learned that if you just do a little day by day, before you know it you’ve developed a portfolio of work. Also, I didn’t set out to win awards but my books have won 10 different awards. In addition to the awards, I’ve been inducted into the City of Anaheim, California Business Hall of Fame as an author and fashion journalist, so having my work recognized is extremely rewarding.”

6. How do you define success in your field?

“Loving what I do, being recognized by the public and obtaining my dreams! Building my business and building my brand! When someone reads my novels and tell me they loved the ride, that is so gratifying. I want to bring positive entertainment to the people!”

7. What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

“Have a firm belief in yourself and your talent. Be your best motivator, be persistent and if you truly want to obtain your dream, don’t stop! You’ll likely encounter some frustrations along the way, but never give up and you will find the goal you’re chasing. Don’t doubt yourself or listen to other people’s opinions. Drive your own career forward!”

8. What are you currently working on?

“Right now my focus is on getting my screenplays made into movies. My script Pretties on the Prowl is a comedy/thriller and we are currently in development on this movie. I am also working on a completed Rod Stewart biopic, chronicling the rock ‘n roll icons successful career as a rock ‘n roll star. My latest Natalie North Novel Running Stop Signs was released to the public on August 16, 2024, so now my focus is on promoting that novel and getting my screenplays made into feature film movies.”

9. How do you keep up with trends or changes in your industry?

“I don’t feel that I complete with other authors or script writers. I write my own material that comes from inside of me and I keep my focus on my own work. I write books and movies with mass market appeal, so I don’t necessarily have to keep track of trends. I haven’t used AI yet at all; I write every word myself and I want to continue down that path. I do need to keep up with technology regarding social media, but I love technology so that is a joy for me. Social Media is a great way to stay connected to your readers and followers, as well as a solid publicity platform!”

10. What’s something surprising or little-known about your profession?

“How difficult it can be to find the right agent, publisher, producer, etc. However, if you believe in your talent and your ability to deliver what the public wants to read you will build a great team around you. I have worked with literary agents, entertainment attorneys, and solely on my own. I actually prefer writing independently so that all of my words stay exactly as I write them.”

11. Any last words or message you’d like to share with our readers?

“Always believe in yourself and move forward each and every day. Before you know it a year has passed, and whatever you’re working on is one year closer to where you were than when you started!
Also, extreme confidence is a blessing! Even if you feel you have delusional confidence, congratulations! Believing in yourself is your greatest asset! Be your biggest cheerleader!”

12. Is there anyone you would like to thank?

“I would like to thank the readers of my novels and my fashion magazine, my followers and the public. I also want to thank my publisher, agents I have worked with and Hollywood producers that are making my movies. Also thank you to Intellerzone for spotlighting me and my work. I truly appreciate it! Success and happiness to you all!”
